Johnson Throttle problem

I have a 1972 50 HP johnson outboard. Last summer me and my wife were on the lake crusing along when suddenly the motor slowed to half throttle without me moving the control lever. Ever since then, it will not go over half throttle. It runs good and starts good but I cannot get the power out of it. One guy told me to change the primer bulb on the fuel hose but I dont know. What do you guys think?

Sounds like you've lost spark to one cylinder. Check for spark. Best of luck. Rick.

Definately lost one cylinder. It could be spark or carb. My 115 would do the same, but a carb rebuild revealed a stuck needle valve. The rubber on the end was stuck in its seat. Cleaned her all out but, it runs like a top now.

Re: Johnson Throttle problem

I questioned if it was a spark problem. two years ago I had the carb rebuilt and one coil pack replaced. I will check, thanks everyone.

Re: Johnson Throttle problem

Its seems as if I did not have a spark like you guys said. I changed the plugs and the problem is fixed. However, now I am finding out that the motor is not coming out of gear all the way. When the shift lever is in nuetral, the motor is actually just barely in gear. Obviously something is sticking somewhere? Any suggestions?

Sounds like the shift cable is out of adjustment. It can be adjusted at the motor with the trunion wheel on the cable. go a turn at a time and test forward and reverse. if you can't adjust it out....replace the cable.

Re: Johnson Throttle problem

Thanks. When the boat is shifted, the thottle cable pushes the trunion wheel to shift into gear. When the lever is returned back to neutral, the trunion wheel does not follow back all the way. The cable is brand new last year. I do not know anyhting about boats. I'll try adjusting it and seeing if that works, thanks again.
