i have a mercruiser ,it ran fine ,until the other day, i give it gas,the motor revs up but dosent speed up, it almost seems like its going into neutral, iv been told that it could be a spun prop, i took the prop into a boat store ,but they said ,theirs no way to test for a spun prop, so what do i do buy a new one ,without testing the old one. the boat is a 1996 larson / mercruiser 4.3 engine

Re: spun prop

no way to test for a spun prop?
take a marker like a silver sharpie (I love the silver they work great)
remove the prop and mark a line from the inner spline over the rubber part
then to the outer prop metal.
put the prop back on the boat and run it, remove it and check to see if
the line has moved out alignment, there is a chance that you spin it and
line it back up but if you are lucky it will show.
or borrow a prop and try and see if it fixes the problem.

That's the best way unless you have a spare, which you should carry. Now's a good excuse to get one.:)

Re: spun prop

What kind of prop is it? I spun mine last week and it took the guy at the prop shop 10 minutes to fix it, and yes he confirmed it was spun. The newer stainless props are simple to fix. The guy at the shop even showed me how to fix it in case it happened out on the lake so I bought a spare insert. Find yourself a prop shop not a boat store. A good prop shop should be able to hook you right up.
