Motor won't start (after getting hot?)

2000 Volvo Penta 3.0GSM-A in a Glastron SX175. I took the boat up to the lake last weekend and had a few problems. After running it for a few hours, it was turned off while still in gear, and it took about an hour before I realized that my buddy left it in gear. Of course then it wouldn't start. I figured it was flooded as we got towed back to shore.

The next day we took it out again. It started right up, ran fine and we cruised around for a few hours. Then we tried to start it and heard this horrible "KA-CHUNK" and it wouldn't turn over. We tried it a few more times and every time we got the nasty "KA-CHUNK". As we got towed in again (TWO walks of shame in two days!), we all deliberated around the boat as to what was going on. I heard everything from "bad starter" to "teeth missing on flywheel" to "siezed motor".

After a nice LONG ride home, I started it up today. The first time I heard the awful "KA-CHUNK", then the 2nd time it started right up. I ran it for awhile and turned it off and on about a dozen times over an hour and everything seems fine. My brother the mechanic thinks that it is the starter so I took it out in anticipation of him coming over tomorrow (everything looks fine, but I don't know what I'm looking at). So, what do you guys think? Are the 2 tows related? Or, did I flood it one day and had another problem the next day? Did one cause the other or random problems? or, will it only happen after getting heated up under load? Thanks for any help.

Did you ever figure out your problem?

I am having a similar problem on almost the same boat - mine is a 2001 Glastron 175 with a 3.0 GSM-A Volvo Penta.

Does your boat have the original starter in it? I replace my Volvo starter with a Sierra last Fall. I am thinking that the pinion in my Sierra starter doesn't line up exactly the same as the Volvo starter, causing an intermittent Ka-chunk noise.
