1970 4 HP Johnson

I recently purchased an aluminum john boat. It came with a 4hp Johnson model 4R70E.

Is there a reverse or at least a neutral?

For neutral when starting the motor, tie it to the dock. For forward, untie it. For reverse, steer it 180 degrees so it points to the rear.

hi.
as i looked at diagram of your gearcase i'm sure there is forward and neutral.
i think reverse is when you turn over engin in the mounting bracket.

No . No shift rod, no clutch just a shaft with the gear fixed to it #17 and a pinion gear #16
