what does a stater do?

i was told my stater might be sticking. idont know what it does, does anyone?

You will get more help if you describe the problem you are having with your merc rather than trying to verify what someone has told you.
A stator cannot stick, it is fixed in place by bolts so that it stays put. Your flywheel has magnets in it that rotate around the stator creating an electric current in the windings of the stator. That current is used to charge the batteries and to supply the energy to the switch boxes to create the spark.

As said above, stator does not move, so I don't see what "sticking" can mean there.

Maybe the trigger is sticking? That does move to advance timing on throttle-up.
