Hi guys please excuse my lack of knowhow with this but im pretty stuck even to what to search for let alone find and repair as yet lol

okk here we go
50hp late 80's i think it was i will find the plate though and double check when i go to the boat, vro model fitted to a little 16 footer speedboat,
Last season had impeller etc done checked and serviced over ran well on the 4 outings it had put on plane with no probs
this time first go out i cant seem to get it to pick the boat up on the plane at all!
Had muffs on it running fine revs up without an issue when its in the water
it starts runs tickover fine
even pushes along fine but when u try to throttle on it picks up slightly then dies off
back to slow speeds, the engine just doesnt want to rev up when under load!
It doesnt keep revving at all just picks up for a split second then dies down.
I spoke to a marine engineer regarding this and he said was a bearing on the prop, but surely if it was a bearing slipping then the engine would continue to rev but not actually go anywhere?
Is this just me putting 2 and 2 together and making 5 or is that the case?
If the nylon bearing under the castle nut on prop were to be gone would the engine still rev up and run fast but not actually make the boat go anywhere
like a slipping clutch as such?
or would the engine just die down if this were to be the case?
with throttle right down on the controls the engine lunges then dies off and carys on like that every few second
pleeaseeeee could anyone have an idea what this is? is it a carb rebuild time?
Thanks in advance guys
Mike

Re: HELP PLEASE 50hp johnson

if its not revving up then its not a bad hub.

sounds like you are losing a cyl... either because of spark or fuel. on muffs it can be down a cyl and still idle smooth.

Classic symtoms of carbs needing thorough cleaning and rebuild.

Re: HELP PLEASE 50hp johnson

Thanks guys, ive got the carbs off and going to use the step by step guides for a clean me thinks lol
Or do i just pop them into the repair place, hmm lol
Ohh yeah odd one too after the carbs have been revamped, is there anything on the engine side that i should be concerned about? Or that needs removing and scrubbing?
Thanks againg guys you have saved me a hell of a nightmare so far lol

Re: HELP PLEASE 50hp johnson

well doing the carbs is exploratory and in the end at least you attempt to rule out that in any future issues..

you need the REBUILD kits...you cant just take the carb apart , clean and put it all back together,...you need new gaskets and some new parts!!

then when it starts up, if it fixes the problem...GREAT, if not, you move onto the next portion of troubleshooting..

you could have checked spark as well

and the timing of the linkage needs to be right...

when you are in gear and trying to push the boat the engine is under load and is running under different set if criteria than when in neutral .

one thing at a time...

get new plugs( twice i have had bad plugs that seemingly looked fine!!!)

get the carbs back together and make sure you have good spark...

good luck

Re: HELP PLEASE 50hp johnson

I have that same engine, and experienced the exact same problem.

Carbs needed to be cleaned. I didn't have compressed air available, so I got a piece of fine stainless wire and rodded out the high speed jets. The jets on the two carbs are slightly different, with one jet a slightly different diameter than the other.

Ahh i think im with you, cheers bob and PW2, I did have a conversation with a guy from quarterdeck marine in plymouth earlier who said it could be the coil too :-(
Im debating now if i should just take it to him and leave it there for the day to see what happens :-( lol
Anyone in the south west fancy the job for cash? lol
I will keep you posted after ive spoken to him about getting it in and see what he thinks lol
Cheers again all
