I just replaced the coils and plug wires on an Evinrude 10 hp. The old ones were very brittle and cracked. My problem is that I now have no spark out of either one. The old ones had spark but there is no putting them back because of their condition. I put the new ones on exactly how the old ones came off. Am I missing something simple or is it possible I have two new bad coils?

Make sure the coils are mounted properly - flush with the mounting bosses. Did you use the proper stranded copper/metal core wires? The wires must be properly screwed into the little metal pins on the coils. Also, check the points. Did you change them also? Set properly at .020"?

Thanks for your help. I did not change points. I bought the wires from the same place as the coils. I'll give it a try. Thanks again!!

What type of wire did you use? You must use solid metallic core wire. Automotive wire will not work.

Napa sells the wire for somewhere in the neighborhood of $.75 a foot, you need 5 foot. It says metallic core on the outside casing.

Since you're going back under the flywheel to check, pull, clean and regap the points, too.
