I have a 1968 (CD24) that i am fixing. I am having trouble with getting the gears back in. The manual i have states that when you put the gears back in, the forward gear has a slot that alligns with a pin sunken into the lower unit. This is the gear farthest from the prop (which i believe is the forward gear). The other gear has a tab that alligns with the lower unit. the book says that if the pin is driven down into the lower unit it needs to be drilled out, but later is says that it should be flush. the pin right now is flush with the lower unit body ( in the curved area where the gear rests). does that pin need to stick out to catch in the gears slot, or does it need to be flush and just alligned with the grooved slot? Thanks

It is supposed to stick out so it can prevent the bearing from rotating.

Ok, thats what i was afraid of. Does anyone have any tips on drilling out that pin? I would guess that i should start with a small drill bit and work my way up to a bigger one?

Forget drilling it out. Think about drilling a new hole.
