Great site here, tons of info. Here is the problem im having. Just bought a Whaler Montauk with this outboard on it. The model is J90mlcos. When i turn it on connected to a hose,it quickly heats up to 220-240. There is water coming from the talley pipe in a hard stream so i do think it is the water pump. ANy advice? The bat has been siting for a few years. Thanks!!!

Where are you getting the temperature reading from?

Check the thermostats first. You will need a service kit and a six pack: http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfind...gd_poid=111072&gd_row=39&**********=008573735

If that doesn't fix it, replace the water passage deflectors. You will need new cylinder head gaskets and four deflectors.

Thanks, that was my first thought, have them on order....also ordered the repair manual(SERVICE MANUAL SET - 1985 E/J; 2 THRU V-6 MODELS). Where do i find the passage deflectors?

Thanks....I think I will try the thermostats first. See if that corrects it. The defectors seem like a more involved.

I just did thermostats on my 110 hp bubbleback... Filled my swear jar right to the top.
I have done thermostats on flat back V4s and they are a little easier. The deflector replacement is a piece of cake comparatively speaking.
Thats my 3 cents worth.
