Simple question I need to ask before I attempt to install. Is there any reason why I cannot install a water sepatating filter on my '97 volvo 3.0 I/O? If it's ok, then where would be the recommended place to install?
I have my boat in the shop right now due to rough/surging engine performance while @ idle:(. Are there any standards for fuel line on a motor this size? I see that some filters have 1/4" and others are 3/8". Thanks:D!!

The filter needs to be between the gas tank and the fuel pump. Where you physically put it depends on where you have room to put it.
You MUST use marine fuel line type 1A with a 3/8 ID of the hose.
Filters can use 1/4" NPT fittings.

DO NOT use the Push On type barbed fittings on any fuel lines. They damage the line when clamped.

Re: 1997 Chaparral Volvo 3.0

the mechanic who did repair on my boat advised me to mount the fuel/water separating filter at or above the level of the carburetor. He said that the filter could actually cause the carb to siphon fuel. Is this common knowledge with these filters? i haven't looked at an imboard to see the stock setup to know for sure. Anyone have any experience with installing a fuel /water separating kit in an inboard? I have a 1997 volvo 3.0 Chaparral.
Thanks? !

Your mechanic knows nothing about carbs.
No way can a carb siphon fuel. It has a needle valve that closes against fuel pump pressure.

What I meant to say is that the filter could create a siphon, robbing fuel from the carb. In other words, it would somehow interrupt or starve the carb of getting enough fuel.

I had my fuel tested and it was fine - no water in it at all he said. He also told me that once water has contaminated the fuel it is impossible to remove w/out removing all the fuel with it. And that while using a good fuel stabilizer or octane booster will help your motor burn the fuel w/out stalling the motor, they can also cause damage to the carb or jets over time.

Sorry my wording was so confusing in the previous post.

Can't happen, the fuel inlet into the carb is above the level of the fuel.

Ayuh,.... That's Not true, at All....
Water, being heavier, will seperate,+ stratify....
All ya gotta do is pump it off the bottom...
Good Gas will be floatin' Above the water....
