Alright guys just bought a ski barge with 79 85 horse v4 it had been sitting and the guy thought it needed a water pump and timing. I started it after cleaning the carbs and changing fuel lines and spark plugs. I cant get the fuel filter to seal back up so i thought for now i would bypass it with an inline. What is the 3rd line going to the stock filter?! Return line or something? It will run fine if i plug it but i have to keep pumping the bulp to keep it idling. And it often dies when you try to rev it?? Wisdom please. And also the water will only circulate after a minute if i crack a water line in the back??

Re: 79 85 horse issues

each one of you carbs has 4 jets, 2 on each side. upper is low speed, lower are high speed,(behind the plugs on the side of the bowl)

your fuel pump should have an in line and out line. pump also has built in filter.

i strongly suggest you get an OEM service manual for your motor. http://www.outboardbooks.com/

I think I may see the problem here. The fuel filter with three lines, where you plugged off the third line, does it have a thumbscrew on the front of it? If so, then the reason you have to keep pumping the primer bulb is, that you have disabled the fuel pump.

It's a vacuum-operated pump with one line in and one line out plus a pulse line to the crankcase. You plugged the vacuum line.
