350 Heads rotted out? Common for fresh water?

It looks like the coolant passage rotted right away into the fire ring. I am looking at some older boats with the 350 engine and hope this is not the norm for an old boat. Can anyone speculate why this happened on a fresh water engine?

Not common at all. Looks like a neglected engine, and irresponsible owner.
