have had the motor for about 3 years. When i bought it i noticed that there was no water being discharged when running. The previuos owner convinced me that was operating properly, the cooling was internal (i don't know much about these things). I have been using the motor that way for 3 years without any problems. I have now sold the boat. the new owner is asking me the same question. Now that i am telling the new owner the same thing that i was told, it almost sounds to ridiculous to believe.

I am a fool for believing the original story? If so, how has it been running for the past 3 summers?

Just the nature of the beast with these engines. They show almost no tell tale until speeds increase. Verify that the impeller is good and that the over heat alarm is functioning for peace of mind.

First, does it have a tell tale, not all engines do, it would be on the back side of the engine, normally starboard(right)side just under the hood.

If there isn't anything there it doesn't have one so it is internal.

If the pump was bad you would know because the engine would have melted by now.

If the pump is 3 years old it need changed anyhow which is normal maintanance.

Our 1975 70hp has a good pump and shows little or no discharge at idle. A bit disconcerting but block stays cool and it pumps like gangbusters at speed.

Tell tale not the right wording in previous post as that refers to a pee streamer. These older models do not have this feature.

Thanks for all the feedback.

I was never able to locate a pee streamer (or tell tale), which is one reason that i thought the internal cooling was possible.

the fact that the engine never overheated, even when pulling wakeboarders, was also a good sign.

Happy boating to all of you
