:confused:I have a 89 evinrude 70 hp that has been ruuning fine until yesterday now it will start and idle or run for approx. 5-10 minutes before dying out( it will stay running if u pump the bulb when it starts to die). well ive checked fuel, fuel lines, no leaks or obstructions in lines, oh vro is unhooked also , i premix, so i took fuel pump off and took apart , every thing looked good except for an oring that was torn into, it was the one that goes over shaft of piston so i replaced o-ring with one from auto parts store and reassembled every thing and it is still doing the same thing, so i guess my biggest question is can the fuel side be bad even if all components looked okay, talked to local mechanic who said once u take vro pump apart sometimes they do not work right then he told me a story bout not being able to get the reg fuel pump with 3 outlets anymore and that if i used a replacement with out 3/8" lines that it would starve for fuel and that all he could get was a replacement with 5/16 lines, also checked the pulse valve for obstructions and it was clear, does sierra make a replacement non-vro fuel pump with 3/8 lines anymore and does anyone know a part# ,any info on this will be greatly appreciated!:) could pulse not be strong enough to operate fuel pump and how could i check that ? i do not have means to purchase a gearcase pressure tester like maxrules suggests so is there anyway to diagnose for sure that it is pump?

Fuel pump can be replaced with a 3 outlet pump from a 1982 era 150hp V6. You may need to do a little bracketry but it will work fine as a premix pump for you.

This may help you a little.

Check pump output by disconnecting the fuel hose from the pump to the carbs. Use the hose to save the impeller and crank the motor with the hose going into a container.
Strong regular spurts = pump working O.K.
Strong spurts tapering off to weak or no flow = pump failing.
Dribble or no discharge = failed pump.

Re: pLEASE Help PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!! With Evinrude 70 hp

Hey Kenneth, let me know how it works out I am having the same problem my VRO is still working thought, mechanic said fuel pump part of VRO is bad. I also had trouble with water in the gas and cleared that up as well as rebuilding the carbs, its running now but runs rough and like you said after so many minutes the primer bulb starts to get soft. I did read a post in here that all the fuel lines need to be replaced in an engine that old due to the ethenol, they said something about it that it weakens the old hoses not made for ethenol and they star to constrict, doesnt sound half bad idea theat is where I am going next...

okay, unhooked top line going to carbs and connected a clear hose to top connecter and did not receive any fuel not even a dribble, i cranked it and let it run for bout 3-5 min and did not see so much as a dribble from outlet to carb, only thing is when i pulled apart fuel pump i could not see any visible damage , i guess its just bad, Should i have seen fuel pumping as soon as motor was running ? like i said i let it run for 3 min or so and i never saw anything but anyway guess ill order the pump now! will 433386 work its off a 20 hp rude?

well took pump off 20 hp 433386 and outlet to carb is too small , 1/4" maybe so i unscrewed nipple to see if i could replace with a 5/16 pipe nipple but threads are not npt not sure what kind of thread on outlet kinda looks like plain coarse thread but have not checked so i guess im just gonna try to find one with atleast a 5/16 outlet ? the one that kenyfam suggested i cant find for under $186 on shop evinrude it comes in two pieces for the motor you suggested ? anymore help is greatly appreciated!
