Trans still shifts ok but the splines spun inside the rubber. It happened on a hole shot and when i walked back to look at the out drive i noticed the ski strap had come loose from one side of the boat.

Is it possible it wrapped around the prop and caused the splines in the coupler to shear from the rubber and spin. I just put this engine in a few weeks ago and the coupler looked fine.

Is there anything else that can cause this?

Did you properly align the engine? Does the engine stay firmly planted upon full throttle? I bet the engine twisted and put too much pressure on the coupler.

If the strap caught the prop, there is no question you would have known it!!!!!!

Ayuh,.... Did you Align the motor,..??

That's probably the Most common cause of coupler failure, Poor Alignment...

No, i didn't. I have several more couplers but i won't have them long if i don't align it when i put it back in tomorrow it sounds like.

I may have a problem there. The block of wood and the fiberglass that covers it at the front of the engine is loose.

I bet the engine twisted and put too much pressure on the coupler.

I don't see how it could twist with the back of the block bolted down like it is.

not the side to side ya have to worry about its the up and down...when that engine torques it doesent take much movement at all to bind everything up,heat up,melt...if its any consolation and i know its not, the coupler is doing exactly whats its suppose to do.....
