4.3 Volvo wont start- warning horn sounding

I have a 2000 Four Winns Horizon 180. Running the boat today and stopped for a few minutes and turning the boat off. When I tried to start, got the warning horn going off steady in the engine compartment. Before stopping, oil pressure was fine, temp was fine. Boat was in nuetral and kill switch in place. Anyone know where to start and what exactly is connected to the warning horn at the motor? I do have power to everything on the boat. Thanks for any help you can provide!

Re: 4.3 Volvo wont start- warning horn sounding

I have a 2000 VP and my horn stays on until oil pressure is up. So if I sit there with the key in, it annoyingly beeps at me untill I start the motor or switch the key all the way off.
I once flooded my engine compartment and it went off but I suspect that was just a short.
I'm pretty sure it's just temp and oil when it goes off, hopefully someone more experienced will chime in.
It may just be a coincidence and the starter went or a relay.

Thanks for the help. When you say it beeps at you until you start it, are you getting that beep from the dash up front or from the warning horn back at the motor? Reason I ask is that mine beeps at the dash as well when I turn the key but before I start it....however with this issue, it is the really loud annoying alarm in the engine compartment that is going off. Thanks, Merle

What's the full model number of your engine? or even the serial number.
The gauge senders have nothing to do with the alarms. you may just have a bad oil or temp switch which could be turning on the alarm without a problem.
The reason I need the model or serial number is to see if yours may have temp sensors in the risers. that could also cause the alarm, along with the fact that boat year and engine year isn't always the same.

Does the alarm go off when you start the engine? If so, then it's working properly.

In your title you say it won't start either, mind explaining that a bit. Does the engine turn over when you turn the key to start? If it does, have you checked to see if youi have spark?

The engine wont start, nor does it try turning over....not even a click. So, from turning the key on to turning it further to start, there is no difference, just the engine warning horn in the back beeping.

I don't know if this applies to volvo, but while working on my merc this last week, I had a senior moment were I had the same symptoms. Yep, it will not turn over (and for good reason) if you leave it in gear. Maybe in your case, the sensor is indicating in gear, even if it isn't.

Thanks for the help. Yes, mine is the same way. The shifter is definetely in nuetral, not to say that that there is continuity across the switch that confirms this isnt bad like you say. I also am not sure if that would give the constant beep I am getting versus just not starting when I turn the key to crank it. Merle

Don S., I was wondering if you were able to find anything that could point me in the right direction? Thank you, Merle

The warning beeping is normal on my engine (and should be on yours as well). The engine beeps to tell you that the key is in the "on" position and your oil pressure is low. Obviously you will have no oil pressure if your engine is off. I'm not sure why you gave us this information. Has the beeping changed from when the boat was running normally?

What is the battery voltage reading? You say you "stopped for a few minutes"; depending on how long a "few minutes" is and what you had on for accessories, you could have drained your battery.

It could be that your starter has gone bad. The starter on my Volvo 5.7 PEFS (my boat is also a 2000, engine is a 99) went a few weeks ago. It started up just fine at the ramp and we want out, got a skier in the water, and then it wouldn't restart. No click or anything. I pulled the starter and had it tested at an automotive place which confirmed that the starter was bad. I purchased a new marine (do not use an automotive) starter and all has been well since then.

Yes, I did.
First, start with this thread on testing the starting system.

Will will probably find this link handy to. It contains links to the OEM service manuals for the EF model year engines. You won't need the EFI manuals, but the electrical and ignition will cover your problems as well.
