Working on a 1965 6hp Evinrude Fisherman model 6502M

Compression is 80psi in upper and lower cylinder (does that sound high?)
Rebuilt the carb

I noticed the brass s/s needle was somewhat "deformed"... looks like it has been not so gently seated quite a few times.

My question is:

Is the 1968 6502A NEEDLE,Slow speed (part#0311340) the same as a 6hp 1965 6502M? The carbs look identical...at least to me they do.

Should I even bother trying to repair it, if that is even possible? (Before I spend $40-$50 for a new one, assuming the one that I may have located is indeed the correct part?)

P.S. Does anyone have a REAL service manual, the Clymer and Seloc manuals are very general and vague, not providing any details for this motor....

Got a bench grinder? Go look at a good needle, pull the one you have out and grind/sand it back to a fine tip like the new ones. Unless it's completely mangled it should work for you.

I was hoping to hear that...

Thank you for the response.

Done it before, we all don't have $50 bones to buy a new needle, you will need to play with the adjustment once it's back in, won't be as per manual as you removed material but will be close. The only other issue would be, was the seat in the carb damaged?

And the needles are probably the same in the two engines. Pull em both and compare.

The seat did not appear to be damaged... the tip of the needle didn't break off inside of it or anything. You would think there would be a seal/ gasket to go way back in that recess...

Let me ask this... would silver solder bond to the brass, or is this a really bad idea? (I don't have a lot of experience with brass)
