ok so my cousin who lives with me just bought one to replace his 9.5 and we took it out tonight and the 15 actually ran slower than the 9.5 and i looked online and found a video of what its supposed to run like and this was nowhere near where it should be.. it pees water starts first or second pull and will rev like a banshee in neutral but as soon as it gets in gear it barely moves the boat if you lift it out of the water it will run like it should. its almost like the resistance of the water is way too much for it..

anyone have any ideas on what i can check, tweak or tighten?? thanks for any help!

Sounds like it's running on one cylinder. Do a spark test. Also do a compression test. I assume you tried adjusting the high speed needle.

yeah we were going to do both of those tommorrow. i did see alot of post that they are infamous for coils going bad so that will definately be a good place to start!

thanks!

Yep, they all do. I order coils in batches as every engine I work on pretty much needs em.

so we had good compression on both cylinder, spark on one cylinder. swapped out the coils with each other leaving the wires and the spark followed the coil. we now have it narrowed down to points and condenser.. we sanded them a little and still nothing...

does anyone know a part number and a good place to order some points and condenser from??

If the non-spark followed the coil, then you have a bad coil. As long as you're under the flywheel, I'd replace the points and condensers too. Get parts here on I-Boats.

Re: 1955 evinrude aquasonic fastwin 15

sorry i think i worded it wrong. we took the coil that we werent getting spark from (upper cyl)and moved it to the other side (lower cyl) and we got spark. we took the lower and moved it to the upper and no spark.. so both coils are giving spark...

do you by any chance know the part number of the points and cond? i think it is OMC#172522 but i want to make sure before i order them.
thanks for the help!!

Re: 1955 evinrude aquasonic fastwin 15

You either have low compression (I don't think that is your problem) or weak spark. Are the coils cracked or covered in powder? The old OMC coils fail with age. Even if they spark they are bad. Replace the coils and plug wires. If you refuse to replace the 55 year old wires at least trim them back a bit at the coil end so you know you are getting good uncorroded contact. Here is a photo of some really bad coils. If yours resembly them in anyway they are bad.

Also, please don't run the motor out of water.
