I have a Johnson 20R-69D on a 15 foot aluminum boat that has been sitting for years. I decided it was time to get the boat water ready again. After gutting the boat, rewiring, carpet, plywood, etc. I was working on the motor. I read through the "Awakening a Sleeping Outboard" post, and it was very helpful. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the Top Secret Files!

Changed LU oil, rebuilt the carb and fuel pump, replaced impeller, etc. Finally got it to run, but it was smoking a lot and seemed to be spitting some oil into the water. So I decided to change the points. I got the new points installed and gapped, turn around to put the flywheel on...and then notice the large crack on the underside of my flywheel.

I have sent an email to Marine Parts Outlet, and plan to call Twin City Outboards tomorrow (the forum search button does work). But if anybody has a idea where I can get a replacement flywheel, I would appreciate it. Thanks everyone!

**** Found one, thanks all ****

Re: 1969 Johnson 20 HP Flywheel

Hi kessol,

That doesnt look good at all, and I don't know how easy it will be to find a new one. I'm actually looking for a flywheel myself, also for a 20R69B. Mine isn't damaged structurally though. The only thing I can think of is to have a machinist re-weld the center piece and re-balance it.

Mine suffers from a bad magnet, so only one cylinder fires. I've had no luck finding a source for a replacement, but havent really looked very hard yet. Though, it appears that the flywheel has been out of production for a while.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask. I've also torn my motor down to all but the crankshaft and pistons, and replaced most everything in that could be problematic. It has very low hours on it, and when firing right can really go, for a 20.

Good Luck, and please post up if you find a source for replacement flywheels.

Thanks,

Ryan

Thanks samo_ott,

I'll report back if I find that any of those work out.

Re: 1969 Johnson 20 HP Flywheel

they come up on ebay allll the time.

an 18hp or a 25hp will work. you need 0383185

however, there could have been changes to the part number, because of a different starter gear or something, thus, it being the same but a different number

Thanks for all the replies!

I was able to find a replacement flywheel at a salvage yard about an hour from house. I got it installed this past week and the motor is running well. Taking it to the lake this weekend to fine tune it and give it a good run!

Good luck on your searches as well.

If I may ask, what area are you in, and what ballpark was the cost in?

I found the part near Guntersville, Alabama and it was $50. A coworker called a friend who knew of the salvage place.
