Need help! What is the "stretchy" fabric that is used to mold custom speaker grills?
I have been watching those custom car programs where they often build custom speaker boxes for the trunk or door side panel. They stretch a fabric (not a fiberglass product) over the wood mold and it has that nice "vacuum formed" look. Then they lay the resin and glass over it to fabricate the custom grill. Has the look kind of like pulling a stocking over your head....
I would like to do something similar to make a custom cover between the splashwell and the deck. The splashwell is an angled shape, but the deck is a square shape, and there is a big gas tank in between. So I need to transition between the two nice and smooth.
Rather than making something from ply and glass covering it, I want to do the stretch fabric, then glass cover to get a nice custom molded shape. And I think that will conserve space, maximizing the available deck space.
What material are they using that stretches in two (or more) directions over the speaker grill forms before the glass/resin is applied?
BTW, the carpeted trim on the splashwell has been replaced with deco-dot vinyl trim, same as is being installed on the deck.
