A bad day on the water. Earlier this spring bought 93 Grady Gulfstream with 93 Yamaha 250. Filled up both tanks last week before heading out on fifth trip of the season with 5 other guys. When bought, tanks were 1/3 full (boat ran all last season and fuel was stabilized before winter storage - says seller), so I filled up both tanks and stabilized before first launch. Had no problem on prior trips this season - probably 15 hours total. So last week we're about 2 miles from harbor at 38 RPM running strong and suddently motor powers down and stalls. Long story short, right there on water I trouble shooted and noticed nothing out of ordinary, changed fuel/water separator, and all plugs. Motor would start but stall within a minute. Seemed like wasn't getting fuel. Primer bulb not sucked in but would not get hard either. We were able to get to shore with guys alternating priming bulb every 60 seconds (about 5 pumps each minute). Next day I changed primer bulb but that didn't help - motor ran for about a minute in neutral and stalled - same as the day before. There is a smell of gas in bilge (not too strong) but I thought it might have to do with fact that I spilled a little gas when changing filter, which in in transom. I also overfilled gas tanks so fuel spilled out of overfill valves (exiting through hull into water) and thought maybe somehow gas leaked into hull that way. Also, when changing bulb on mooring I did notice significant sheen develop around motor after it stalled. That was after I had ran motor at 35 RPM for 10 seconds in neutral before it stalled. Shop thinks it's fuel pump and wants $750 to tow and replace (and they can't guaranty that will fix it). Any other thoughts out there would be greatly appreciated?

Thanks 99Yam40 - it's a 250TXR Saltwater Series. Appreciate the link.

Re: 1993 Yamaha 250 Dies

that engine has 3 lift pumps and an electric pump for the fuel enrichment circuits.
your describing a classic lift pump failure.
lift pumps are about 52 dollars each and the gaskets about 1.20.
but it coulde be a carb needle stuck or one or more of the enrichment valves failed.
remove the airboxs,open the throttle.
turn the key on and pump the bulb.
if a lift pump is leaking you will hear it and it fills the crankcase with fuel.
if a carb or solinoid is bad fuel will run out of the carb.

a trained tech should know,
if you passed along an internet tip to me on how to fix your boat I would most likly send you packing with the caviet: then let the internet fix it.
if your Mochanic doesnt already know then ya should withdraw voluntarily.
unless your outconus.
then all bets are off and I dont mind.

Re: 1993 Yamaha 250 Dies

Rodbolt, Well, problem took a twist. The tech went out (finally), was unable to prime, noticed the guage showed empty so switched tanks and was able to prime (some effort there) and run fine for 20 minutes (all pumps working). I had actually tried the same thing (switched tanks) when the problem happened but could not get bulb to prime maybe I just didn't stay on it long enough before switching back to other tank. Anyway I know both tanks are full because I topped them off the day this first happened. I had also noticed on prior trips that that one tank read empty but I knew it was full so ran on it a few weeks ago for about 30 minutes to use the gas with no problem. So today the tech left boat on mooring assuming I had just run the tank empty (like I'm that stupid). So we know problem is between tank switch valve and one of the tanks. Appreciate thoughts you might have. Also, could it just be coincidence that bad line also same that fuel guage shows empty, or is that a clue to the problem?
