I am new to the forum and don't really know how these things work but I was told this was a family friendly sight so hear it goes. I recently recieved my late granpa's boat and have been slowly been tinkering with it. The engine is a 1976 Evinrude 85.I put muffs on it about 2 weeks ago and it ran fine. I took it to the lake and put it in water and let it run for about 15 minutes. A buzzer started going off and there wasn't a consistent water stream coming out. The pump was repaired and tested with muffs again, it was fine with a strong stream and no buzzer. I took it to the lake 3 days ago and it ran perfect all day. I ran a complete tank of fuel through it. Today I loaded my kids up and took it back out. I fired it up at the lake and within 10 minutes the buzzer on the throttle control was going off again, it was still on the trailer. There is still a strong stream coming out of the water hole. I don't know what to do now. Can someone please help?

Are you mixing the fuel 50:1 with TC-W3 oil?

Have you serviced the thermostat?

Have you serviced the water passage deflectors?

Is the screen on the water intake in the lower unit in good condition?

A water flow through the tell-tale or through the exhaust relief lets you know that the water pump is functional, but tells you nothing about the flow of water through the cooling passages of the engine.

If the thermostat fails to open, water will not circulate around the cylinders.

If the water passage deflectors move, they will block the flow of water around the cylinders.

If the screen on the water intake is broken, small particles will enter the cooling system and block the thermostat housing.

Re: 1976 Evinrude 85

I admit I am ignorant when it comes to boat motors so this is what I do know. The screen is in good shape, the water is coming out of the tell tale hot, but takes a while for it to get that way. I am mixing the fuel 50:1. I have no idea what or where the water passage deflectors are and have no idea where the thermostat is located.

If it was my '62 dodge I would say it seems as if the thermostat was sticking. Until you mentioned it I didn't know if thermostats were a possibility or not. But today when the alarm started the tell tale water was a little warm. I killed the engine for a couple of minutes and when I restarted it it ran without the buzzer for about a minute. The water was warmer then. I am about to put muffs on it to see what it does now.
