It is probably magneto ignition. If there are two coils under the flywheel, it definitely is. Magneto ignition does NOT have an alternator and will not charge the battery while running so you must recharge it every day after using the boat.

The usual ignition systems use points and they are located under the flywheel. You need to pull the flywheel and clean and set the points. They should be set at .020 open.

Once that is done and you have changed or cleaned the plugs, check the idle and set it to 700-750 RPM in forward gear, in the water. Idle speed is set by the stop screw on top of the throttle tower. If the idle speed is too low, the engine will stall when put into gear.

The engine speeding up then stalling sounds like it is too lean. This can melt a piston at high speed. Be certain that the low speed needle on top of the carb is not set too lean--between 3/4 and 1 turn out from lightly seated is usually close.

Sounds like you also might need to check your reed block. My '96 120 had the exact same symptoms as yours, spitting fuel from top carb and rough idle. Had a broken reed on #1 cyl. Luckily, it didn't cause any other damage. Ran good at high RPM, but was rough at idle. Idles great now, and runs very smooth at speed. Pull your carb ( fairly easy, 2 bolts) and look into the manifold with a flashlight. You should be able to see most of the reed block assembly. Good luck!

You might wanna check the jet in the carb.If it has set around it might be full of gunk. The low speed is VERY small and clogs up easy.J
