It only took me 2 days to get the flywheel removed, lol...only to discover that the coils, which are the old brown insulation type but appeared to be almost "new", were not set right by whomever installed them WAY past the boss. BOTH have a gash in the insulation, one went all the way through the insulation from where the flywheel hit it... see pic.

It looks like they removed the metal shavings from the obvious collision that completely destroyed the face of one of the boss, also damaging the inside of the flywheel (see pics), set them correctly and put them back in there.

No wonder it wouldn't run smoothly, but it would run still, somehow. I never ran it at night but I bet it would have made an interesting light show, lol.

The entire armature plate was loose, as well as greasy.

There is a "little?" damage to the inner flywheel as well from this contact... this and the boss face damage concerns me. Other than making it a PITA to set the new coils...how concerned should I be with these damages?

Happy Father's Day to all!

Set the coils properly, not a PITA at all, line up up with the mag plate, flywheel is fine by the looks of it, as long as the coil insulation isn`t all the way through they should be fine too. If not an epoxy can be used to reseal the coils, if not just get new ones.

Well that's GREAT news, I was worried.

:D

Let me go do some research on epoxy.

Thanks!

I got 2 new coils from my local dealer for less than $50... why chance it.

Now I have a spare.

Just a note I have epoxied several coils with a great amount of success. Most notably on my Chris Craft 5.5 Challenger motor. The coils on that were cracked up really bad and its been running for over 5 years on the epoxy job. Always an option on stuff that's hard to get as long as the coil test good.
