Had intermitant problems over the weekend with engine stalling when going from neutral to forward.
Any thoughts
Checked shift cable seems free enough.but not sure how free it should be.

Hi Fish

You will have to excuse my ignorance its my first boat,I have the manual but find it a bit confusing when explaining how to set it up,
The switch is fine, its not in the center when prop is locked in forward gear,

In manual it mentions right hand rotation drive unit and left hand rotation drive unit.

Quote from manual
Important:Shift cable must be connected at the remote control for the appropriate rotation (LH or RH ) drive unit ???

Also it says remote control shift cable is this the cable going down to the sterd drive (why call it remote control ??)

Cheers

You still need to follow the tests to determine if the switch is working properly , not just that it is in the correct location at the correct time .
could be bad contacts / loose connections etc.
its all in the manuals / how to test switch and all

Re: Interrupter switch

The fact that the engine dies tells you the switch is working, your problem is probably an old corroded and rusted lower shift cable binding.
Remove the drive and disconnect the lower shift cable from the engine.
Then move the cable from the drive end (That way the slide doesn't turn on you)
The cable should move back and forth through it's full travel almost effortlessly. If it's binding it will hold the switch engaged too long and cause the engine to die.

This link will explain further. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?p=1930449#post1930449

Here is a link to download the OEM Merc service manual http://www.4shared.com/file/115650157/a164fcd6/Service_Manual_14.html

Re: Interrupter switch

Hi Guys
Thanks for all the quick replies, the switch works fine as Don says its stopping the Engine, I have puled the cable back and to and it seems to be free enough, can the set up be done on land or has it got to be done in the water,

Cheers

Re: Interrupter switch

Sorry for all the questions,
Just read this
Important: If the boat is being equipped with REMOTE CONTROL THAT HAS SEPERATE SHIFT AND THROTTLE LEVERS, the shift assist assembly that is shipped with the engine should NOT be used,The use of the shift assist assembly with this type of remote control can cause the shift lever to move out of gear unexpectededly,

My boat has one cable from the throttle lever and another going down to the stern,

should i have the shift assist fitted or not (this looks like a damper)
In the maual it refers to Left Hand & Right hand drive units how can I tell what mine is.

cheers

Do you have a separate shift lever from the throttle lever? I doubt it.
The above doesn't say anything about the number of cables, it's asking about the number of levers you have to deal with.

You also have a RH rotation drive. That is what all single engine boats with Mercruiser use.

Post a picture of your shift and throttle control lever. That would cure a lot of problems.
Personally, I think your are trying to fix this by reading and trying to reintrepret things to find an easy way out.
You need a new lower shift cable, it's a common problem and happens to everyone with an Alpha style drive if they keep the boat long enough.
