I have a 50 hp mariner on a 16' glassmaster tri-hull. the carbs have less than 40 hrs on them since being cleaned. I have replaced the fuel line system twice. Engine starts perfectly every time, and out of gear revs smoothly. In gear it starts to lag just past half throttle. Any ideas would be helpful. I can't get the boat to plane out even with a light load. So far i have heard about my new throttle cable stretching or incorrect prop. Please help if you can, the fish are laughing at me!

Re: 50 hp mariner bogging

What year? How were the carbs cleaned or were they rebuilt? What prompted them to need cleaning? Was there any improvement when they were cleaned? Have you had anyone pump the primer bulb during the lag? Why did you replace the fuel lines twice? What improved when you replaced them the first/second time? Has the boat ever planed with this motor? How do you know you are just past half throttle, does it have a tachometer or are you guessing?

You can check if the throttle cable is stretching or installed correctly by pulling off the cover with the engine off and pushing the gearshift/throttle forward. On my 50HP, the throttle on the outboard is wide open when it is all the way forward at the control. I don't care whether it stretches or not, just so long as I can get from idle to WOT and back.

Your prop should have the pitch stamped on it. Google "propeller selection tools" and you will come up with a variety of calculators that take into account the weight, pitch, HP, and several other variables that affect performance.
