Viagara for '90 Tilt/Trim ?

Have a 1990 '90 HP Johnson with Tilt/Trim. tilt has been up while on trailer in driveway for the last 2 months - newly bought used boat. Goes up and down with no problem.

But, put boat in water/mooring over the w-end, left engine tilted up. By Monday am, engine was completly tilted down. Can raise and lower, but slowly creeps back down.

Seems that first step would be to make sure fluid level is filled. But newbee here and not sure really how to do so.

Tilted all the way up and seems to be a resevoir with an external cap & flat-head screw. But don't want to loosen screw and have engine drop down.

1. Can't figure out how to release & secure the safety arms
2. Can't seem to locate the bleeds for the fuel.


Any help, suggestions or I reckon jokes, would be much appreciated.

make sure that flat head screw is tight

When the trail locks are locked, you need to raise the engine slightly higher so that you can flip them back to release.

You need to add fluid initially to get air out of the system if any is in it.

The slotted fill plug is in the face of the reservoir on the starboard side.

Raise the motor and support it.

Remove the fill plug and add fluid until it runs out of the hole.

Close the fill plug and tighten.

Release the support and cycle the motor up and down three full cycles, helping if needed.

Repeat the entire process several times.

Your PT&T parts will be similar to the diagram in the thumbnail.

Be sure that the Manual Release is tightened to spec.

loosening the cap wont allow it to go down.Look on the left side engine mounting bracket,you should see a screw in a hole.Make sure that the screw is tight.It will NOT come out if you loosen all the way,it will stop ,that secures that you wont drop it in water.You might loosen all the way then tighten it down again,you dont need to over tighten.TIf its loose ,it may allow the engine to go down over time.But it may also be a stuck valve in the unit.Try the screw first and come back if it dont work. That is the manual release for the unit.If the elec.motor ever burned up,or other reasons,loosening that screw will allow you to raise the motor ,it will be hard,likely will eed to get out of boat to do so,but it gives you ability to gain access to the elec motor and the resivior to replace the fluid.The safty arms(trailer locks)should be movable by hand ,perhaps you will need to spray with some penetrating fluid ,and work loose with a block of wood and hammer ,they often get overlooked for lubricating.

low fluid does not cause creep down. Low fluid creates failure to lift. Creep down is usually caused by bad seal on forward check valve. It is not usually a user repairable item. It does not get worse overnight. It typically gets a little worse month by month and over the course of 1-2 seasons it ends up drifting down so quickly that trailering becomes difficult. These are nearly universal constants of hydraulic trim that apply to Yamaha, Evinrude, Mercury, Volvo, inboard, outboard, or any board. So your trim will need to be fixed but it is not facing imminent doom.

You may read some posts where systems slam down when the owner throttles. This is usually because their system was designed to tilt but not trim. The pressure bleed off stays gradual whether you are at a trim or tilt angle.
