Iv got a problem with My Johnson 9.5 0r 9.9 outboard I think its a 1964, the model number is MQ10R. I'm wondering how does the fuel pump work? does it use mechanical pressure with a push rod to a diaphragm or does it use vacuum? What is the preliminary turns when adjustment for the rich/lean?. We installed a known working carb and Fuel pump off an Evinrude 9.5 That ran great but slips out of Forward gear and had Linkage and other problems so we put the carb and fuel pump on the Johnson and it still won't run. we checked the points and have the gap @ .020 and the points look like their in great condition. also new plugs that get great spark and a new pull cord too. But nothing seems to get it to start. A whole can of starter fluid over 3 days and 1 or 2 hundred pulls later, We're stumped.

Approx. 1.5 to 2 turns out from gently seated. Are you using fresh fuel mixed 50/1 ? Put some of it in a spray bottle and use it rather than starting fluid. Starting fluid is an absolute no for a two stroke. What do your plugs look like. Are they dry or wet? Disconnect the kill switch wire as if it is malfunctioning you can pull for the rest of your life and it won't start. Did you do a linc and sinc after carb. was replaced? What is your compression? Again, stop using starting fluid. Best of luck. Rick.

And stop using starter fluid !!!! very damaging to your motor. Use a fuel / oil mix in a spray bottle.

Thanks for your help, we will look into this. Whats a linc and sinc?. I don't know what the compression is but it feels real good pulling on the cord. I'm using fresh fuel at 50:1 and the plugs were slightly wet...And no more Starter fluid.

Re: Tried everything, won't start

Coils set within .020 of the flywheel magnets?

Choke on until it fires?

Tiller arm turned counter-clockwise against the stop?

High speed jet cleaned?

Gasket between the fuel pump and the engine airtight?

? Some motor's factory service manuals have a section of the tune up procedure called Synchronization and Linkage Adjustment. The 9.5 manuals don't have one, but they do have the Tune-Up Procedure in section 2.
