I have a 1968-1970 Johnson 55 horsepower. Currently it was running fine and the gas began to get low and wouldn't keep its power. I switched the tanks and needed to let it run on a high idle for a while before I was able to get it to go into gear without stalling. Several hours later the engine again began to bog down and didnt have much power then it finally stalled out. I am able to start the engine with no problems but it will not go into gear without stalling. What are some possible issues and where should I begin.

There is plenty of gas in it this time.

What is the gas to oil ratio for this particular engine?

Re: Johnson 55 horse

sounds a bit like water in the gas.On each carb is a brass drain plug.drain all the gas /water from the carb bowl by pulling the carb drain plug and squeezins the prime ball from the tank ,flushing out all bad /watery fuel from the system.be certain the replacing fuel is clean ,no water with a 50 to 1 gas oil rati.that would be a pint of oil to six gallons of gas which is the standard portable tank.
