My friend has a 1981 Grady with what I believe to be a merc 480. Not sure exactly what outdrive he has but pretty sure it's not an alpha or pre-alpha going by his discription.

He's thinkin it may be a generation II. He can only pull the outdrive back about an inch before it feels like something catches and holds it back from comin out. He read something about a preload pin that needs to be pullled before getting the outdrive off.

I've not yet had the time to help him and see what he has there. Just wondering if any of you pro's out there can relate to my decription and point us in the right direction to get started. Thanks for any help!

Re: Removing outdrive

It needs to be in forward gear to remove the outdrive.

The preload pin has nothing to do with it.

Re: Removing outdrive

It`s a spring loaded pin on top of the lower driveshaft. sounds like you need the manual located in the Adults Only section.

Just found out it is a merc. 140hp. He has in forward and cannot pull drive . Anything else in there that would hold it back ??

The preload pin is at the end of the drive shaft that is part of the lower unit...it is spring loaded and not user accessable. The lower unit can be removed from the outdrive for impeller servicing. My Alpha Gen II has eliminated this preload pin.

Your description sounds like he is trying to remove the entire outdrive from the transom bellhousing, and I believe that there is a o-ring on the end of his drive shaft going into the coupler that is causing him concern. It will 'hang' up as it is passing through the gimbal bearing, and only need some extra effort to clear.

If I am wrong, then I am sure that someone will jump in and 'correct' me!

Happy boating!
