91 omc 3.0l starts and dies

I have a 91 3.0 omc, all it does is, fires quick and dies.I can't get it to stay running. I've gone through the carb, thinking the float was sticking. I still get the same thing. It has electronic ignition, and someone mention that the coil might cause this. I've never heard of a coil doing that. I thought they were good or bad. It has been sitting for the last few years, I put new fuel filter,cap and rotar on it. I put about 10 gallons on new gas in the tank.
Anyone have any ideas.

Do you have a resistor attached to the coil? I'm not sure if electronic ignitions have that resistor. I do know that if that resistor is bad it will act like it is starting and will die as soon as you let go of the key.

No,theres no resistor on the coil. Would it be under the dist. cap? Theres a black piece thats under the rotar on the distribitor would that be it.

Make sure with the key "on" you haave voltage at the "+" side of the coil. if not start tracing the wire back to ing switch for a break.

Ayuh,... Check the sparkplugs,... Is it Firing,..??
Pour an ounce of gas down the carb,+ try it...
If it lights,+ dies, it's still a Carb problem...
