How difficult is is to replace a water pump on a 1970 20 Hp Johnson?

Is there anything else I would need to replace while I am in there?

I have replaced them on 91/2 johnson's before.

If you have done a 91/2, you should be ok on a 20 hp.
Take a look at the parts breakdown to see how it is assembled.

I have removed the bolts and the lower unit seperates about 3 inches.
It appears there is something holding the unit at the top.

When I move the gear shift it moves the seperated unit about 1 inch up or down with the shift.

Do I need to remove a pin or bolt or just use more force to remove it?

Did you disconnect the shift linkage?

I believe there is a side plate about midway down the leg that's held on with 2 screws. Remove this plate to get to the shift linkage coupler. Remove the lower bolt from the coupler and the link will slide apart.

Thanks for you help and assistance. That was what I needed to know.
It was easily removed and I can quickly put in the new pump before the 4th of July and get the grandkids on the water.
