This is for sale on CL , the guy says he can't get spark, or hasn't checked the compression. Previous owners son said it ran two years ago and has been stored in a garage since. I would like to know anyone's opinion on these motors? Are they somewhat decent and reliable, or are they junk? I can probably set it up to do a compression check, but am not sure what might be the cause of no spark. He has a service manual and parts catalog to go with the motor. He is asking $450 for it, is it a grabber or should I stay away from it?

if the compression checks out , go for it but i wouldnt pay more than 300, good simple to work on motors, and lube the cylinder before testing comp, because it been sitting awhile
if its been run in salt water i would avoid it

Every engine advertised on ebay and Craigslist ran when put into starage. Definitely do a compression check. If it is ok then consider buying the engine but be aware that while easy to install, electrical ignition components can cost a bit--adjust the price accordingly.

Thanks for the advice about the motor, guys. I was a little leery because of it being made by Chrysler. One question I have now. I can understand about shooting a little oil in the cylinders to lube them due to sitting for a while, but doesn't that give you a false compression reading? I know that the oil trick on small gas engines will change the compression reading, and at times create enough compression to even make it fire? I only ask this because of not being familiar with outboards at all. Thanks

Usually squirting oil in the cylinders will increse comp. But the comp on an outboard should be within 5-10# of each other. If it has a bad cylinder it will show even if you squirt oil in it.My Force has 150# on eachwith a good guage.
Look at the plugs first. They should have NO rust just carbon and burned oil.
$450 is too much even if it runs.J
