20 Hrs on the new boat...thoughts...

Hey guys,

So, I've put 20 hrs on my boat now. It's an 08 Monterey 180FS with the 4.3L Volvo setup.

I figure I've put some time on it and I'd like to write out my initial thoughts on things...read it if you want...and don't if you don't. ;)

At any rate, here's my thoughts:

The boat:

So far it's been pretty good, but I have had some issues. Learning to run with the carb (vs. every other vehicle I've ever had which was fuel injected) took me a few trips. Pump the throttle a few times before starting it, and that helped quite a bit. Using premium fuel rather than 87 also seemed to help, as she doesn't diesel anymore, and she starts a lot quicker. I still have kind of a strange hesitation issue when I start out from a stop or a slow crawl. Seems to start to rev, drop off and then will rev until I hit redline, should I keep the throttle down. This is pretty annoying, but it's under warranty, so I guess that's ok.

So far I think I've had to tighten EVERY bolt inside the boat. Every through bolt that holds the padding on the side, or the windshield or the seats in was loose. A few even fell out, which was nice as it alerted me that I needed to tighten them. ;)

I like the no carpet deal...don't think I'd want carpet, even if it is removable.

Keeping a boat with a very white interior clean is a FULL time job:
IMG_6762.JPG

Stupid thing gets dirty just looking at it. ;) But, when she's clean she looks NICE!

I wasn't sure about the seating layout initially, as I like the bench in the back, rather than the 'jumpseats' I had beside the doghouse. BUT, it works well and gives plenty of extra floorspace.

I have yet to go out for 6 hrs and use more than 1/2 tank of gas. I mean, its a given that we end up swimming more than motoring, but the engine seems to sip the fuel.

The outdrive hasn't given me too much problems. The speedo port gets clogged up on a semi regular basis, which is kind of annoying. One thing worth note is that I was told the Volvo drive shouldn't clunk into gear, as it's a cone/clutch system...but mine clunks into gear. Maybe it's out of adjustment, or maybe I didn't understand what the dealer was talking about when I bought the boat.

The stereo on the boat is just so/so. I mean it's got some nice options, and it sounds nice, but on the third trip out I hit a big wake and the speakers started popping. DOH! Oh well, I'm a big fan of replacement speakers anyhow.

The boat handles great...Max speed is right around 50...jumps on plane pretty easy, and is easy to handle around the dock and loading on the trailer is a breeze.

Speaking of the trailer. I got a 2010 Loadrite with brakes. It's a galvanized trailer with bunks and loading unloading is easy...no power necessary. It trailers great behind both our small SUV and my diesel truck. One weird thing is the boat comes awfully close to rubbing against the end of the tongue...the back end, that is. Which is weird and kind of annoying. Not sure why it was setup that way.

So, that's about it for now. I've been having a great time. If I had it to do over again, I might not have chosen the same boat. Instead of buying brand new, I might have gone with something older, and perhaps even an outboard...but I haven't had to winterize yet, so we'll see how hard that ends up being. :)

Appreciarte the write-up. If I can make an observation...

You have 2 potentially major issues brewing. A motor that won't run properly, and an outdrive that 'clunks'. Have you posted in the engine/outdrive section? I think you should. I'm far from an expert, but neither of these things sounds normal to me.

Those are 2 expensive pieces of hardware. My advice is to get them straightened out while your warranty is still in effect.

Good luck!

I agree with JoLin...better sooner than later if you have concerns. I'd have the dealer look at it right away since you paid for the coverage buying brand-new.

As far as the speedo, those pitot pickups are notoriously bad, my advice is to get a GPS. Very accurate for speed and great for navigating too.:)

Hope you get those issues resolved, the boat still looks sweet too!

They can certainly make a clunk sound. It will be magnified if the boat is moving and you change directions and/or your idle speed is too high. For example, if you are moving forward and the prop is spinning, it will definitely clunk if you put it in reverse.

I see you have your drive up. Store it in the down position.

That does look weird. If there is any chance that could hit if you hit a really big bump, I may look into modifying something there.

I have 5 years on the engine/drive warranty. I have spoken with the dealer several times and he recommended them doing the first winterization. That way they can check for metals in the fluid, etc...I figure when I bring it in for that, I'll have him check it out. He's a good 1.5 hrs each way for me, so I'm a little loathe to bring it in..especially considering it's barely broken in yet.

And yeah, the trailer thing ticks me off. I don't think it's going to hit while trailering, but it sure looks scary while loading the trailer sometimes.

Is it really hard on stuff to store it with the drive up? I always leave it up when out of the water, as I'll never forget to put it up when I hitch it up.

Thanks for the replies, guys. :)

Which engine package? They should be able to get the engine to be less finisky even with a carb. This appears to me to be the only real warranty issue.

Loose hardware is just part of the deal. I keep a combo screwdriver, and a 1/2 inch wrench within arms reach as I tighten stuff constantly.

As Bruce mentioned, cone clutches (most Volvos and all Bravos) do "clunk" depending on what a clunk is . . . They do not "clatter" which Alpha's (dog clutch) do if you do not shift them properly. I am guessing this is what the sales guy was referring to.

Anything but a white interior is stupid if you ask me. Hot to the touch and very uncomfortable against bare skin. Part of the deal . . .

Way easier on the bellows. Also a little easier on the shift cable as its not in its bent up position.

It has the 4.3GL/1.66SX package.

Thanks for the reply...I didn't think the loose bolts were a problem with the manuf...just kind of funny how much loose stuff I found. :)

Back to the dealer it should go. A brand new boat with loose screws, and a carb out of adjustment. Unaccpetable!!!!!!! Otherwise it looks like a very sweet boat.

The dealer seems of low quality, they should be checking that stuff as part of a pre delivery checklist. At least running the engine and verifying proper shifting, idle, etc. It is possible something minor is out of adjustment.

Actually the dealer has a test pool and he said he ran it for 1.5 hrs in the pool and that it ran like a champ. I dunno..weirdness with the throttle...other than that, I'm a pretty happy camper.

I have a glastron and I noticed quickly that things were vibrating all over due to loose screws. I keep a screwdriver and tighten whatever I need to if it's annoying me. I've done all the floor pieces and I just had to tighten down the dash cluster yesterday. A screw was literally about to fall out.

Took me 15 hours to wash/wax my boat to new condition. But it's the whitest boat on the lake IMHO.

I've had the carpet in once since I bought the boat this spring. I prefer it without myself.

I've unclogged my speedo tube once and it unclogged itself once.

Doesn't surprise me about the loose hardware...I'm in the business, after all, probably know some people who built your boat.

The engine running properly is your biggest concern. Didn't even know Volvo was still using carbed motors in '08. Can't remember the last time I installed a carbed I/O...

Yeah, it hurts to see that pic with the drive up! Keep her down. When you put her down, watch carefully! Odds are good that in full-down mode she can bang the skeg on the ground.

Come winter, you do NOT want that drive up. It goes beyond just extending the life of the bellows by keeping it down... it actually keeps water from freezing in the wrong places.

Re: 20 Hrs on the new boat...thoughts...

Nice looking boat.

When I bought mine, the dealer INSISTED that I bring it to him at 20 hrs. He asked about anything and everything, any concerns or questions I had. He then went through and adjusted the carb, valves, linkages, checked out all of the moving parts, etc. It was part of the deal with the boat. Did not cost me anything.

I got a seven year warranty with my boat, so for seven years, it went to him for winterizing. (Hard for me as I had always done my own.) After the warranty expired last year, I did it myself...felt good:)

I never experienced loose nuts on my interior. The window frame was the only thing I had an issue with. Ended up backing them out one at a time and putting a little Lock-tite on them, no problems since.

I believe you should take it in, during the week when you will not be using it, and politely demand that they address the hesitation issue. Also, have them take it to the big pond, not their kiddie pool, and check out their adjustments.

For the most part, it just sounds like it needs a little fine tunning.
