470 merc newbie question

After frying a regulator - I have just switched over to an alt. The points need to be replaced as well. Can I pick these up at an automotive store or are they a Merc only item. Sorry for the silly question - I'm new to boating.

As far as I know the only parts store you'd find the points is one that sells boat stuff ( Sierra Marine, Mercury etc.. ) they could match up with something, they dont usually have the books and info, might be able to match something up or may know it from doing it before.. doesn't hurt to try, or NAPA as they sell Sierra Marine ( Aftermarket) you dont need to buy Mercury/Mercruiser, up to you of course. Leaving the KEY in the ON position will burn out the points. If you ave a radio or other item that you need to have on when anchor'd it should not be tied in with the key being on. Typically only the Gauges are powered when the key is on ( besides the engine ).

Kainon - thanks for the help. After talking to two local Merc dealers (without success) Napa came through!

Loved the pics of your boat -great job! I am a big fan of inline engines. My other project is an 46 Ford Truckster with Chrysler slant six for power.
