I am putting a new water pump kit in this engine, because the previous owner said it got got hot while running it in a barrel. Should i test in a barrel or with muffs?

Thanks for any info

muffs, in the barrel exhaust heats up the water.

You can run it for a short time in a barrel. Muffs are the easy and preferred way of running it out of the water, BUT you cannot test a water pump's function on muffs. You could leave the pump impeller completely out and water would still go through the cooling system from the hose pressure.

I agree with F R if you really want to test it properly put it in the water. I use a 100 gallon cattle water tank. It works great but I use it every day in my shop. (to cheap to buy a test tank lol) Even in this somtimes the exhaust causes cavitation and dosnt always work well so I always put them in the water.
