Prop doesn't spin, but seams to engage

I have a 1987 mercruiser 175/V6. When the throttle is in forward or reverse position the prop will not move (motor revs but no prop movement). If I try and spin it by hand it will spin one way or the other depending on throttle position. So it seams to be shifting properly but I am getting no power to the prop. Any Ideas???

Thanks!

Re: Prop doesn't spin, but seams to engage

Howdy,

Have a look at the back of the engine. If you see metal filings or a black powder, you may have a failed ("spun") coupler. You can also look at the back of the engine at the drive shaft (Yoke) and you should be able to tell if it's turning.

If you run the engine on a flush adapter, do you get water out the back and/or does it overheat rather quickly?

If your coupler has failed, you must remove the drive and engine to replace it.

try another prop too, or mark the prop to see if the hub is spinning

Thanks for the fast replies!!!

I do get water out of the back and it does not overheat.

I have already checked for a spun hub. That is not the issue.

When I rev the engine while in gear, I do feel a pretty heavy vibration while the RPM's are dropping. No strange noises or anything. I have taken the lower unit off and checked the lower drive shaft and shift gears. All seams to be working OK in the lower unit and I have adjusted the cables "by the book".
