Haven't had my rig in the water since Memorial Day. In Ohio that's pretty much 1/3rd of summer. I'm sure the mechanic gets sick of my weekly call, as I get tired of his weekly response.

I've learned 2 things through this...

1. If it ain't broke don't fix it
2. Beginning to understand the latter part of the old "2 best days a boat owner has" story.

Re: Frustration

I can share in your frustration a little - every time I go out on the water, I discover a new problem. But hey, if it were easy....

Re: Frustration

I hear ya. What's especially frustrating is I created a big problem out of a smaller one and left my self between a rock and a hard place. Can't get angry at the mechanic other than his pace of repairs. I mean, how long can it take to replace a carb...especially since it's the third time you've done the job?

Same situation here. Boat was in the shop for a week after Memorial Day after my fishing trip to Canada to track down an electrical problem with the power trim and now it's been back in the shop for almost 2 weeks after the motor broke. Kinda sucks.

Re: Frustration

I know where you are coming from. When I got my first boat sevan years ago I felt like I was at the mercy of whatever mechanic I was dealing with just praying that i wasnt getting played. I have since learned quite a few things but sometimes with an older boat problems come up and its back to square one. All in All being a boat owner has been great.

Re: Frustration

Also, a good mechanic will be busy in the summer. There's a reason why the mechanic with time on his hands doesn't have any business.

For those with a short boating season this would be especially frustrating. One reason to have more than one boat.

New boat owners seldom appreciate the down time, especially when they buy an old beater boat. Also there is often about 3 weeks from the time you buy it until you first get it in the water. That's why early spring is the time to buy, not the beginning of summer.

Re: Frustration

I gotta say that he just absolutely knocked me for a loop. Just called to say it was finished.

He R & R'd the carb 3 times over the time it's been there. Also, he fixed a leaking drain plug. 4 weeks later and his bill?

$147.39!

I'm embarassed to have ever bitched about him.

Re: Frustration

Dropped mine off Monday to get a new water pump impeller. Everything else was working great. He just called me and said he had to put a new starter solenoid in it too. It shouldn't have needed a solenoid, but they're not that expensive so I wasn't going to quibble. Then he told me the bill was around $325. He won't be getting that amount from me. I don't mind the bill being a little more than estimated, but that's over double with no phone call to see if it was okay, not to mention they replaced a good part. We'll see what happens this afternoon.

Re: Frustration

Nah...I had mine at Gummere's in Canton. Buy alot of parts from Petty's though.

I've D/L'd the manual. This whole thing started when I thought replacing the existing carb with a reman was a good idea.

I replaced it and couldn't get it to idle.
Gummere's couldn't get it to idle. Said the idle circuit was bad.
The place I bought it from in Largo, FL said ship it back, at my expense.
The place I bought it from in Largo, FL said there was nothing wrong.

The place I bought it from in Largo, FL is charging me a 25% re-stocking fee.
Gummere's put the original carb back on.

Re: Frustration

I took the new boat out on its maiden voyage (for this year) and a half mile out the impellor went (I?m guessing the marina I purchased it from last year didn?t change it as they said they would). I put it on the trailer and drove over to the nearest marina (not where I purchased the boat) and they said they would take care of it right away. As 3 techs were working on my boat I told the wife ?This is going to cost me big time.? Other than giving the wife another example of me being wrong, it all turned out good. They had me back on the water in 45 minutes at a cost of $60.00.

I live in Largo, FL. Want to pass along the name of the shop, so that I, and others, can avoid? Was it a carb shop on Ulmerton Rd?

Re: Frustration

I've got a hot restart issue with my boat. It definitely needs the carbs and fuel pump rebuilt but I haven't wanted to be without it so I'm just dealing with it. I will have to take it in at some point before I take it with me on vacation in August.
