85 horse fuel consumption?

Now that I have the 85/75 hybrid up and running on my 17 ft tri-hull, it seems to really suck gas. I need to get the tach working to see what the RPM's are at WOT, but it just seems to be excessive for the driving I'm doing. I can get up on plane, trim it out, and then bring the throttle back into the "fuel saver range" and cruise around at a comfortable 25 mph or so. I have a new 17 pitch prop, 135lbs in all 3 cylinders (cold, havn't verified when warm yet), timing/carb settings are correct and linked properly, fuel drain back in the bottom of the carb cover is free, and a new fuel pump gasket. I get some smoke after running it after it has been shut off and sat, and a little oil on the water around the engine when shut down. I'm wondering if some gas is just being dumped overboard a little at a time somehow?

What's the typical fuel consumption on these engines? If I am pulling a tube or running at a higher RPM, it seems like it will suck a full 6 gallon tank in about 30 minutes or less. I have verified the foam is not full of water, giving me a bunch of extra weight. Boat is usually lightly loaded, at most 2 people in the boat, and one on a tube (one can drive while the other watches the rider).

well considering that the Force is 1960 circa tech... whats fuel mileage? back the fuel was 30 cents and was no big deal. these are not sipper engines they drink fuel..... i know i can run mine (on 2 6 gallon tanks) hard for about 4 hrs and im empty....

Sounds a bit excessive. Don't like the slick on the water. Do dilligent diagnostics/tuneup. Clean plugs, set screws adjusted properly, clean fuel recirc. system if your motor is so equiped, timing, etc. etc.

I had the same question a few months ago. I was told at WOT that it will suck about 10 percent of the HP per hour.... so an 85 hp will drink approx 8.5 gph at WOT. Backing the throttle off will obviously save some. Like the previous poster said, I go through 2 - 6 gal tanks in about 4 - 5 hours. Less if I am pulling tubes etc.

Re: 85 horse fuel consumption?

Trailer Boats did a test on an 18' Bayliner with a 90HP Force in 1997 and it used 5.1 gallons per hour at it's most efficient cruise speed of 26 MPH. It burned 7.9 GPH at it's top speed of 40 MPH. Test boat was lightly loaded with one person on board.

If your motor is running as efficiently as the tested engine (I would doubt it, the tested one was new, and your tri-hull has a lot more drag then the v-hull in the test) then a 6 gallon tank would last you about 45 minutes at WOT, even less if pulling a tube.

Sounds like your fuel usage is about right to me.
