I have just picked up a 1987 Evinrude 110 horse, model # E110tlcur. I started it up yeaterday for the first time and there was very little water coming out of the telltale. I had figured that would happen. I started it just to see if there were any issues. The powerhead runs great. So, I knew I was going to replace the water pump assy. when I bought the motor. Today I picked up a new water pump and installed it. Hooked it up to the muffs, still very little water.

My question, Water comes out of the water pump goes through the exhaust plates and to the top of the head water passages and down through the bottom and out the hoses to the themostat housing. From there it goes out through the exhaust.............right??

I get good flow coming out of the bottom of the water jacket on the heads. I removed the hoses to check. Could my issue be stuck thermostats?? They are the last thing in the system before the water goes out of the motor right??

Oh yeah I almost forgot, I have a seloc manual that doesn't address the cooling system at all other than how to change the water pump.

Stats are after the telltale, check the tube, nipple and fitting on the powerhead for an obstruction, you should get lots from the telltale with a new pump on muffs.

Bk, are you talking about on the telltale?? I did, it's all clear. With the hoses connected to the lower water jacket fittings I get next to nothing coming out the exhaust. I'm going to do the water hose test tomorrow and see what I get.

After alot of messing around with the garden hose we have come to the conclusion that it's the seal on the supply tube under the power head. It will allow water to go to the exhaust plates but when the pressure starts to build up the seal leaks and doesn't allow enough cooling water to flow through the water Jacket and cool the heads.

How hard is this seal to change and jsut exactly what kind of seal is it??

Well, after alot of research through the threads here I learned that it is a "grommet" not a seal. Then I had enough info to choke a horse.

We pulled the power head today and cleaned all the old gaskets off. The grommet doesn't look that bad but it definately has a pressure leak. I also pulled the heads to clean the chambers inside. Found the water deflectors are shot and I will be replacing them too.

When I am done the whole cooling system should work like new. I could probably write an FAQ on how to swap out this grommet so that members will have all my mistakes to learn from. lol!!!
