70-hp-johnson-spitting out of the bottom carb

I have a 1985-70-hp johnson that I have been puting back together. I finally got it to where it will start but it is spitting out of the bottom carb big time. I took the carb off and checked the float and it is alright. I have 120 on all 3 on the compression. It is backfiring a little too. Any ideals?

If it actually spitting gas/oil mixture OUT of the carb, I would suspect the reed valves are cracked or broken.

I looked at them with a flash light they looked brand new. However, I am going to give them a second look see. Thanks for the reply.

It doesn't take much to hold a reed open, may be hard to see by looking into the manifold.

Would a bad reed also cause it to backfire?

Is it back firing out of the exhaust or the intake (carb)?
The reeds keep compression on the down stroke from coming out of the carb.

Thanks Davied, you saved my motor. I took the bottom carb back off and looked back up in there. I found a small bolt stuck in the reed valve. Looks like it came out of the air silencer. How it got there or why I didn't see it before I don't know. If it would of made it to the other side it would of blown up my motor. It's still not running right but not spitting out gas, seems to be a timing issue. Thanks again.
