Usuallly water causes the oil to turn a cream color. May be the type of gear oil used, they are not all the same color.

water is not good, and yes the above opost is correct it does turn to a cream colour. I have jsut dropped my lower leg 4 times with water in the lower unit. there is the preller seals, or the little o rings in the screws in the bearing carrier on the propeller shaft, or the shifter seal and gasket, and the driveshaft seals under the water pump. You will buy everying in one kit and do it all at once. dont be like m,e and only fix one problem....do it all at once. it is not a hard job and once it is done just take your time and understand what it does....mines a 78 so i feel your pain on the older stuff it sucks.that kits cost me 68 dollars at the local boat shop here in the priaries. but online its cheaper.your call

Water is bad in any oil its not good....and will wear out your components...much faster, then rust issues occur its just not good.

May not be anything wrong. Grayish blue may just be the color of the gear oil.
Change the lower unit oil, note the color, run it for awhile and recheck. Normally water in the lower unit will cause the oil to turn a cream color.

X2 on just re-doing all the seals. I was married in '77 and that was a long time ago. We have a great marriage, but it takes some maintenance to make it last that long. I recently got a '71 18 HP model and in the process of checking it out I put the lower end in a tub of water and spun it to check the pump for kicks. Even though it had not run since '86 the pump worked. But of course I was going to replace it. When I drained the gear case it was full of water from the tub and only had maybe a tablespoon or two of oil in it. I really thought the worse. The gear box looked fine. A little scoring on the front prop bushing, but not much. I replaced all the seals and filled it with oil and she works fine.

As long as you need to remove the lower end may as well get a new water pump kit as well.

Mercury problem

Mercury problem

Having a problem somewhere in the fuel system in my 1989 classic fifty hp mercury outboard. When the engine is cold it fires right up. After several minutes at full throttle the engine bogs down and shuts off. When it starts to bog down I noticed the bulb goes flat and I tried taint the gas cap off to see if it was air locked. Removing the cap made no difference. It acts as if it isn't recieving gas. The fuel pump, the air vent, external fuel line, and bulb have all been replaced and installed properly. I have no idea what else to do other than take it my local marine mechanic. Anybody have any ideas how to fix this problem?

Re: Mercury problem

well im not an expert by any means but when was the last time you cleaned the carbs? the high speed passge might have some problems in it. but then again it sounds like an air leak. I have a 4 horse that does that too, I realized that right at the fitting to the motor it was leaking, then it made it shut off eventually, then to start it wasnt easy after, have to pump the bulb, maybe choke it again. then fire it. it could be the fuel links between carbs that is leaking or pulling in air, that would screw you over too. but your bulb being flat is a definite indicator.

Re: Mercury problem

try running it again, doing the same things, but hold the bulb in your hand, and pump it as its running, does it shut off? or keep running as long as you continue pumping the bulb?
