Johnson Newbie with more questions

Happy Independence day all. I have a 1996 150 exedb with a couple of issues I am trying to figure out.

First, the tilt n trim stopped working. I was not happy to find it is not covered in the omc manual. I bypassed the relays and gave it direct power and it only buzzed. The motor is about 3/4 of the way down so it is difficult to get to the pump. At some point someone before me used the manual valve and totally screwed up the slot in the head. There is a snap ring around the manual valve. If I remove that, will the relief valve come out so I can lift the motor? Any suggestions here will be appreciated.

The second thing that is more of a curiosity thing, is the water outlet tel tale. The water comes out with good pressure but in a spray instead of a stream. The hole is clear. It seems there is some kind of filter behind it but I don't think I can get it out without removing the bottom cowling. Is that a filter and if so, what is it's purpose if the water is pumping out?

Thanks for your help and happy boating.

Re: Johnson Newbie with more questions

It has been raining all weekend and I can't even get out to do some work on this thing! Anybody have any suggestions for when I do? Or a link to info on the TnT unit would also be helpful since there is very little in the manual. Thanks

How did you bypass the relays?

Re: Johnson Newbie with more questions

I read on another post to disconnect the harness and give power to the blue or green wire that goes directly to the motor, one at a time, to see if the motor runs. To update, I was able to get the motor lifted and removed the TnT unit and motor. I opened the motor and it is all corroded inside so I will be looking for a replacement if anyone has a good source. I also need to replace the seal on the tilt cylinder if anyone has advice on that. I will try to replace the manual release valve as well if I can figure that out.

Re: Johnson Newbie with more questions

I prevously owned a 78 Javlin (Johnson) 85 horse which I had a similar problem, what turned out on mine was a faulty wiring plug at the throttle control unit on the boat. I replaced the plug and all was good after. Hope this helps...

To test a 2 wire motor you put one wire to + and the other to -. Switch the wires to see if it runs the other direction. If you can't find someone who has a new one in Tampa let me know and we'll help you find one.

Thanks for the help. Haven't found one locally yet. There are plenty on the web so I may need to go that route.

You might source a Seal Kit for that PTT unit, as well as a motor. With a spanner, you can open the cylinders and replace the piston seal, rod seal and rod wiper.
