Engine fires right away when choked. Runs for about 5 sec and dies. Starts right back up but won't stay running. If I leave the choke out and it dies it will start without the choke on the next try but revs up and dies. Also does this when I start with choke and then unchoke.. Bulb seems tight almost too tight even when I take the cap off???

Sounds like your not getting consistent fuel or enough fuel. Have you cleaned the carb. lately? Is your slow speed needle set correctly? Bulb will stay hard until it runs for a bit. Best of luck. Rick.

You need to remove the recoil, I loosen the center bolt and pull it up as an assembly while keeping it together, then I wrap the entire recoil assembly with electrical tape to keep it together (it also keep the tension). WHen putting it back on pay attention to the tab on the bottom of the recoil cup, it has to go back into the hole beside the threaded hole, you'll see what I mean.

How did you clean it without removing it? To do the job properly it has to be removed, taken apart (welch plugs and all) and soaked for a couple of hours then blown out. New kit (omc) will have all the goodies to do a proper rebuild.

Thanks for the info... As soon as I get the kit I will try it.. keep my fingers crossed...

As far as the cleaning, I just took the top half off and clean with carb cleaner and air hose... had some gunk in it and thought it might do the trick... was trying to take the whole thing out when i ran into the recoil being in the way. oh, by the way the rope is gone have been using the electric start. after looking inside the carb through the front it looks like it might have some pieces of the rope in it...

Re: johnson 15 hp 1988 model

 I found something... Finally got time to do a good carb clean. It has a plastic bowl so I'm guessing it's been kitted before. All was suprisingly clean. soaked and blew out... found a little piece of fuel line in the bowl. Got that out put back together and started up... same problem... After some research I found that the tube I pulled out of the bowl which is cracked and freyed is the "idle tube"... Wonder if I can get a new one? Or does it come with a kit?

They started making carb with the plastic bowls after metal, doesn't indicate a kit, just a newer carb.

Re: johnson 15 hp 1988 model

Many times the problem is you don't have enough water in the barrel. Try filling it so the water is at least 1/2 way up the leg and see if that makes a difference. Best of luck. Rick
