1966 3 hp Lightwin carb part problem

I just completed a tuneup of a 3 hp 1966 Evinrude 3602E Lightwin that my Dad owned in the early ?80?s. The tuneup included new coils, points, plugs, plug wires and condensers as well as a carb clean and gaskets. Today I took it out on a creek and after a warmup and slow speed adjustment, it runs sweet. It starts on the first pull, idles great. However, it just does not seem to rev up to the RPM it used to.

I suspect there is a problem with the carburetor?s high speed nozzle. When cleaning, I noticed the tube was twisted, the holes in the side were partially closed, and the ears at the bottom were damaged from over-tightening. But, since I had no parts to replace it with, I cleaned it, tried to straighten it, and reinstalled it. I?d like to get a new one, but Evinrudes?s online catalog only goes back to 1968, when a high speed nozzle for a 3 hp was part # 0312971. Does anyone know if the high speed nozzle was common back to 1966? If not, where can I get one? Thanks!

High speed nozzel PN304949, might have changed.
You might want to find out what RPM the engine is turning before you waist time and money trying to fix a problem that might not exist.
Have you checked spark and compression? Some of those engines would run pretty good on one cylinder.

Spark is present @ both plugs (using a plug grounded to frame and watching for spark). I might also mention that the motor idled very well, so was almost certainly getting good spark in both cylinders (unless some condition causes quality of spark to deteriorate at higher rpms)

I got a tester and checked both cylinders: lower cylinder is 50 psi and upper is about 47-48. What is normal?

I also looked at the plugs (with about 1 hour run time on them); color was a uniform black across both the insulator and electrode.

Thanks for the part number and vendor name - I had no idea where to get one. Even if I find and correct other problems with the motor, I'll know that the high speed nozzle isn't quite right. The motor is beat up, but it was my Dad's - I'd love to get it running right - maybe pass PaPa's old motor on to my son.

Just look for a used carb on Ebay or go to AOMCI.org and place a free want ad on their "Webvertize". Probably cheaper to get a used parts carb than pay for a new part.

Re: 1966 3 hp Lightwin carb part problem

I appreciate the input - especially since there is additional damage to the carb body. One of the two main mounting nuts had been overtightened and one of the "ears" where the through hole is located has a crack running all the way through one side and partway through the other. I put a washer in front of it and it seems to be holding (carb looks / feels tight to the motor), but it would be nice to replace someday. I likewise had no idea where to post a request for a used part. Thanks!
