Challenger Ski Boat - What do I have?

Hey all, I new to boating and don't know alot about them. I wanted to get something that I could take my kids 7 & 4 to the lake camping, boat riding, etc. I looked around at boat ready to go but you all know how those prices are, my wife wasn't going for that. Not knowing if the kids would like it or not I started looking for an older boat I could pay cash for and make it project. I was talking to guys at work that have boats, and one of them had a boat he said just need the seats recovery and some minor work and would be a good project boat. The fuel cell had some trash build up in it and was out of the boat, not a big deal there. The boat had been sitting for a few years out in the open. I went looked at the boat, the carb's were gummy from the bad gas that was in the fuel cell the last time he ran it. We pulled the carb's cleaned them and had the engine running that night. It has a 140 Mariner engine on it, and it seem to run well. I purchased the boat and was working on the tilt/trim wiring, got the tilt/trim working. I pulled the storage cover where the fuel cell slides in and started cleaning leave and other stuff from that area. While I was cleaning I noticed some soft wood and I could pull some of it out from under the flooring area about the center of the boat. Walking around in the boat it has a little bounce to it but not to bad. So I started looking at the transom area. There is a hole there for the water to drain just below the motor, I put my finger in that hole and found the wood was soft in that area and I was able to get some small pieces of wood out.

My question are:
1. Can anyone tell what type of boat I have? I was told was in the late 80's and it was a challenger. The boat is blue metal flake paint on the outside with White stripes oand Challenger on the boat, it has a Mariner 140 power tilt and trim motor on it.

2. Is the boat worth fixing up, and if the transom is bad how can I find that out? Can the transom be replaced on this boat? The motor feels good and solid on the boat, could it just be rotted around that drain hole?

:confused::confused::confused:

Thanks,
Tony

Hi Tony, congrats on your new purchase and welcome to the forums. Some photos and the size of the boat will help us identify it for you. As for your questions about repairing it, if it runs well now and you like the boat, and have time and patience for the repairs, then I'd say it's worth keeping. The transom IS always possible to replace. Looking around on other peoples threads will help you get an idea of the work involved, use the search feature, and you'll find at least a couple dozen good examples of people that experience the same thing that you have.

Everybody around here is very helpful, and if you have the time, they will all be more than happy to help walk you through the repairs if you need any advice.

I should add, if your deck and stringers are rotted, and you've already found a soft spot somewhere in the transom, it should be replaced for safety reasons.

I agree, safety reason, I don't want my kids on a boat that isn't safe. Thanks for the quick reply. I'm attaching a few pictures of the boat and motor.

That is a very sharp boat and a great motor. I think you're in for a complete refit but I definitely think it's a worthwhile project.

Here's a couple more photo's. I will messure the boat tonight and post that. I was told to look on the back right corner of the boat and I could find a VIN number in the fiberglass. Is that true?

There should be one there. Search around and you should find one somewhere, even if it's not in the spot described.

I found this number on the back of the boat. TNV187XRM79K
Is there a way to look up that VIN number? I have performed several google search's but really didn't find anything.

Thanks

I don't know about tennesse but in Texas you have to tag your boat through the wildlife department. You might want to start there.

Re: Challenger Ski Boat - What do I have?

I found the info it's a 1979 Challenger with the factory 1979 Mariner 140 that came on the boat.

Thanks everyone for the info.
