Re: engine overheated with muffs on

first...with muffs on, and engine started did you see water coming from the tell tale or pee hole?? usually under the cowling or cover of your engine??

Next, your prop does not have to be moving at all, you should be in neutral adn still get water coming from the pee hole...

if you answered no to any of these... then you have a water pump issue that requires you take the lower unit off and do the impellar ...

if you got water and it overheated then you may have bad thermostats or a restriction in the water passages..

it locked up??.. you definitely overheated then..did you damage anything?.. maybe maybe not...wont know till she cools down. After overheating, some here will tell you to buy new head gaskets and change them out...

is it a two stroke?..did you have the right oil/gas mix??

let her sit and cool... take a look at the thermmosats and see what they look like. you can as a quick test, take the stats out and put the covers back on.
then with muuffs on start her up and see if the water comes out of the hole stronger... if it does then bad stats...if not then back to restriction or bad impellar... you should see this pretty quickly..so if you get no better water then shut her down to prevent another overheat.

not designed for muffs. should have used a barrel.

STOP! Do not run that motor on muffs, it needs to be in a barrel to be cooled, that's why it overheated. It may be too late already, impeller may be fried or even the powerhead.
