Go to the Engine FAQs Forum. Do "Outboard won't start". Let us know, and good luck. :)

Yeah, kind of a stupid question. I have seen mine back fire but it's not a back fire in the automotive sense of the word as the exhaust in down in the water. It had more of a cough that was caused by a lean condition.

I'm thinking timing way off or too lean condition.

Oil injection is where the oil is mixed with the gas automatically. This way you don't have to mix the oil by measuring and pouring some into the gas tank. You'll have a separate oil tank(s).

Re: merc 60 wont start

There are no right or wrong results.

The tests are designed to find what is wrong with your outboard.

What happened when you squirted fuel into the carb(s)?
What happened when you tested the fuel pump?
What did you find when you checked the synch linkage?
What did you find when you pulled the flywheel to check the key?

We can't help you if you won't do the troubleshooting we designed to solve your problem.

Re: merc 60 wont start

It's been sitting for 2 years...

First thing to do is a full service, including a new set of spark plugs and a water pump impeller. I would also pull the carbs, fuel pump and fuel lines and give them a good clean. Replace the pump diaphragms and the fuel filters.

While you're doing the service, check that everything that should move, does. Many pivot points dry out and get sticky, throw some grease around while you're at it.

What year (or serial number) is the engine? I can give you a link to the service manual with that information....

Best advice is aChris's. I'll also ask if it's safe to assume you haven't been messing with any adjustments?
