ok so specs are in the thread name as well as the problem. I have a stern drive OMC cobra 3.0, shes over heating intermittently, took her on the water didnt over heat, tried flushing her system after i took it out, she overheated. I took off the inlet hows coming from the stern drive while running the engine and there was no water coming up the hose ( yes i had the muffs on and water running). i can blow water out the hose and suck it up but the water does not get pushed up. i can flush water freely through thermostat housing and and engine but she still over heats.

my question is what could be wrong? impeller, thermostat, water pump. Is there something that I am missing? could an inline water pump work if i eliminate the impeller so to speak.

so i took out the thermostat and it as rusted to crap, we had to take a torch to it for over a minute to get it to open, also the impeller was full of sand and crap....

Seems you found your problem, I would think about replacing the Impeller and possibly the assembly it there's much wear. Good LUck

im gonna hope to god it is the solution.. while i was at work my father flushed ALOT of sand and such out of the passages of the stern drive area. the impeller and the housing area arent damaged just clogged.

I would replace the impeller. In fact, I would get the water pump kit & go thru the whole assembly. Look at the liner. Is it scored?

The Cobra outdrive is friendly to impeller change. 20 minute job. Make sure you buy the whole kit and not just the impeller.

so far it seems to be the thermostat, but the waterpump kit is cheap and not a bad idea at all, and the impeller on the stern drive has no damage thank god.

I'm confused did you replace the W/p kit?

Also put the hose on the boat run it with it running take the hose coming from the transom off and look at waterflow. If waterflow poor check the hose between outdrive and back of the boat for holes.

If you have good waterflow then check the manifold and riser for clogs. If that all checks out pressure test the engine to check for head gasket fail.

Most importantly start with doing as I say the impellers in cobras are a funny thing they can not work right with minimal damage.

Good luck

Well, we've been telling u to replace the impeller, but u won't listen. Just because it looks ok, that doesn't mean it is. If a fin is worn it'll overheat. Are u starting the engine before or after u put water to it? Are u saying the engine is misfiring? When's the last time u did a tuneup including checking the timing?

did the time timing 2 weeks ago, the idle is rough, we decided to get the impeller for the rear, we never start the engine before we put water on her, and i do not know if i am misfiring but we are not going to rule it out

ok so i have done everything yall said and its was a combination of 3 things, the impeller, the muffs that feed water were not giving enough water pressure for water to reach the impeller, and there were 3 small flat head screws that were not inplace on the the upper unit, that i noticed this morning that the wholes were leaking water, so i put them in and noticed a huge difference in the engine, and the fact that i now i have water being pulled up to the inlet hose
