If you have spark, you need to check 2 more things. compression and fuel. if it was running fine last season doubt it is a compression problem. most likely fuel. squirt 1/2 tea spoon of 50-1 gas in the carb pull the choke and see if you get a sputter. if not check the compression, should get you in the ball park.

A spark on a plug when outside the cylinder is one thing but does not guarantee a spark when fitted.

Best to check sparks with a spark tester, even an improvised one. Its a CD ignition system so sparks should jump 7/16"

Good sparks proven then move on to the carb/ fuel . Ensure fuel is filling carb bowl ... you should be able to feel it doing that with the primer ball. It could be as simple as stuck float or needle valve. Try what is suggested above with neat fuel in carb throat.

If some signs of life doing that then move on to carb cleaning.

partly closing the choke help to keep it running ?

If so then carb clean almost certainly called for.

Fuel flow Ok? tank venting? Pumping the bulb help?

You might also try adjusting the high speed jet on the carburator. Start with the factory setting, then make it leaner or richer with the turn of the screw. Run it at about 2/3 speed and make your adjustments.

(Try not to take it to a mechanic unless you have to $$$$$. It sounds to me like your carb is either a little dirty or just needs adjusting. Cleaning and rebuilding a carburator is not as bad as it sounds. just follow the book.)

Good luck!!

Oh no it wont!

That is the slow speed adjustment.

A '77 6 hp carb does not have a high speed adjustment.

High speed adjustment needles are located in place of the plug at the bottom of the carb bowl.
The '77 model has a fixed high speed orifice behind that plug

The basic setting for the slowspeed needle is 1? tuns out from gently seated. Then at the slowest idle possible screw it back in a little at a time until it sneezes or starts to show signs of fuel starvation. Then back out again until it just runs smoothly.

For detailed instructions, incl instructions for high speed needles where fitted see the link to Joe Reeves instructions in Tashasdaddy's "Top Secret file"

If you can get it to idle with the choke partly closed. Follow the instructions for adjusting the slow speed needle. If you cannot get it to run properly very close to the basic setting then your carb probably needs cleaning.

BUT try gently pumping the bulb. If that helps you are either not pumping fuel properly or there is an air leak into the fuel line possibly at the connector.
